Funding for the North Brunswick Train Station announced

Station receives $50 million from state funding, Middlesex County commits to construction of parking facilities

It was an afternoon of celebration on Saturday, October 28 at the Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille as Mayor Francis ‘Mac’ Womack, along with State and Middlesex County officials and the Township Council, announced funding for the North Brunswick train station at the Main Street North Brunswick transit village.

The State of New Jersey, through the efforts of State Senate President Stephen Sweeney and the 17th District delegation of State Senator Bob Smith and Assemblymen Joseph Egan and Joe Danielsen, secured $50 million from the state Transportation Trust Fund for the project. Middlesex County announced its support by committing to the construction of the parking facilities at the train station site.

Womack called Saturday, ‘a wonderful and proud day for North Brunswick.’

He said that the Township’s historical connections with rail transit that define the community are ‘long and rich’, adding that the cuts that led to the platform to the old Adams Station are still there.

He said the creation of the train station and transit village promote smart growth and will help the environment by reducing ‘our CO2 footprint and not only give our children a better quality of life but a better step towards ensuring the very life of this planet.’

State Sen. Smith commended Mayor Womack and the Township Council and their collaboration with the State and County.

“We work together as a team to make the right things happen for the people,” he said.

Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said the train station will be an ‘economic engine for the region’.

“It will anchor the development already going on here and undoubtedly bring more foot traffic to the area,” he said. “More importantly, it will raise the quality of life for all those looking to commute to work or to reach recreational destinations.”

The celebration included a performance by the North Brunswick Township High School Band and music by the Big Bleu Band.
